Juvedern is a filler
product that is used to restore
smoother more youthful look to the skin. This
product is used to reduce the signs of aging and
skin imperfections. Juvederm not only smoothes
superficial lines and wrinkles, it is also used to fill
furrows, such as the nasolabial folds, and oral
commissures or marionette lines. This product
can also be injected into the cheeks to create or

Juvederm is made up of hyaluronic acid in a
viscoelastic gel. Hyaluronic acid a
substance naturally found in the bodys cells. This allows the cells to bind or
hold water, and is responsible for maintaining tissue hydration. Over time the
hyaluronic acid will slowly become absorbed, and will disappear gradually with
age. Because this substance is found within the body, and is non-animal in
origin, there is no need for preliminary allergy testing.
There are 4 different types of Juvederm available to smooth a wide range of
imperfections. Juvederm 18 is used to treat superficial lines such as crows feet
or peri-oral wrinkles. Juvederm 24 is injected into the middle dermis. This is
used to fill forehead wrinkles, glabellar or frown lines, and mild nasolabial folds.
Juvederm 24 HV has a slightly higher viscosity than Juvederm 24, and can be
injected into deeper wrinkles and folds. This will also last slightly longer than
Juvederm 24. For more pronounced and deep wrinkles and lines there is
Juvederm 30. This is injected into the middled to deep dermis. Juvederm 30
works well in the deep nasolabial folds, and to add volume to the lips and
contours of the face. An anaesthetic cream is applied to minimize any
discomfort. A local freezing may also be used depending on the area being
injected. Juvederm can last up to 9 months, and 6 months in the lips.
Patients should arrive for the treatment without their make-up. It is also
recommended that if you are taking any anti-inflamatories, or Aspirin, that you
stop doing so 1 week to 3 days before the scheduled injections. Following the
injections swelling and redness may be present at the injection site. The area
may be sensitive to the touch and may also be slightly bruised. All of these
reactions should subside within 72 hours. Excessive facial expression should be
avoided in the hours following this procedure. Sunscreen should be worn in the
weeks following the injection, and excessive heat should be avoided, for
example: saunas, hot tubs tanning beds. The injection area should be treated
gently, do not massage or rub. Patients can continue their regular skin care
regimen and apply make-up the day after the injection. Avoid using any products
containing alcohol.
A consultation is recommend with your Dermatologist prior to the injections, to
discuss your past medical history. Patients who have autoimmune diseases or
who are receiving immunotherapy treatments should avoid this treatment.
Women who are pregnant or breast feeding should not have this treatment. Any
patients who have infectious skin problems, or areas of inflammation should not
have this treatment. Patients who are prone to hypertrophic scarring should
make their physician aware.
